  Thomas William (Bill) Cartledge, 92, died Thursday, January 16.  Born on April 22, 1921 in Edgefield County he was the eldest son of the late Joseph Zachariah  and  Ida Lou Byrd Cartledge.


  Mr. Cartledge graduated from Edgefield High School with honors and graduated in 1942 from the University of SC with a BS degree in Business.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during WWII.  After military service Mr. Cartledge was employed for 2 ½ years by J.W. Hunt CPA of Columbia as an accountant.  He was then Assistant Manager of Cary Printing Co. of Columbia for 17 years.  In 1966 Mr. Cartledge was employed by the University of SC and retired from its Treasurer’s Office in 1985.  During this time and after retirement he worked with the university’s Athletic Department handling student problems during all home USC football and basketball games.  He was a member of USC Administrative Employee’s Club, USC Alumni Association, and American Legion Post 6. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia and a former member of Berea Baptist Church of Edgefield.


Mr. Cartledge is survived by Julia Lee Cartledge of Columbia, his loving & devoted wife of 59 years;  daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Si Amick of Columbia and Nancy and John Girardeau of Aiken; grandchildren, Allison and Paul Amick of Columbia and Loring and Lee Girardeau of Aiken.
  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Cartledge of Columbia and Herman Cartledge of Edgefield; and three sisters, Louise Kendrick of Columbia, Betty Giles of Lincolnton, GA, and Mary Tobin of West Columbia.


A celebration of life will be held Sunday, January 19, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church West Columbia, located at 400 State Street.  Rev. Dr. Donald Bishop will officiate and visitation will immediately follow in the church sanctuary.  A private burial will be held at a later date.
